Smeltehytta was closed in 1822 when access to forest and coal became worse. At Femundshytten there are several cultural monuments such as slag heaps, the farm museum, the Trollbyen, where the "inhabitants" are trolls made of trees and roots, and the toy town of stone slabs that represent Røros in miniature. It was made by the children at Femundshytten in the smelting hut era. Femundshytten has accommodation for tourists. You can get here by taking the M/S Fæmund II, or you can drive to Jonasvollen, and walk or cycle the last mile. There is a road all the way to the front, but it is closed with a barrier.
